Protecting the climate for future generations requires a shift in attitudes and a focus on renewable energy infrastructure.
North America’s electricity grid is aging. Burlington Hydro continues to invest in capital improvements to fulfill its mandate for reliability and to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s customers.
Burlington Hydro and GridSmartCity founding partners are focused on fostering a culture of conservation to reduce demand.
Finding clean, affordable and sustainable sources of electricity supply is a top priority of the Ontario government. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure reports that the province is moving forward to procure as much new renewable and clean energy as can be accommodated on Ontario’s existing grid. Increasing the province’s sources of renewable energy supply will help clean up our air, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.
Locally, Burlington Hydro and GridSmartCity™ founding partners are focused on doing our part. We are fostering a culture of conservation to reduce demand, introducing innovative initiatives towards the goal of bringing more renewable sources of energy onto the grid, and developing streamlined systems to optimize the usage and flow of electricity.
Continued growth in the participation in conservation programs and conservation habits, is also key to reducing our environmental footprint. Conservation, which has experienced exceptional success in the City of Burlington, reduces the use of fossil fuels and lowers energy costs.
Recognizing how important conservation is to the province’s power system plan, the Ontario government has set a high target for reductions in electricity demand. This target is among the most ambitious in North America – 6,300 megawatts of reduced peak demand by 2025. This represents about 75 percent of the expected growth in demand during this period and is equal to taking one in five users off the electricity supply grid.
